The Characters

Equality 7-2521 - A young man whose journal entries tell the story. He desires to be a Scholar, but instead, has been assigned by the Council of Vocations to work as a Street Sweeper. After he discovers an electric light from an earlier civilization, he is severely punished. Equality 7-2521 escapes the society and the only life he has known, to create a new life and a new society of individuals.

Liberty 5-3000 - A young woman whom Equality 7-2521 falls in love with while she is planting seeds. Liberty 5-3000 also secretly longs for a life with more meaning and when Equality 7-2521 runs off into the forest Liberty 5-3000 follows. They fall in love, and she renames Equality 7-2521, "The Unconquered" while he refers to her as "The Golden One."

International 4-8818 - A Street Sweeper who is secretly befriended by Equality 7-2521. He knows about the secret tunnel Equality 7-2521 has found, but contrary to his desire to abide by the law, does not turn him in to the powers that be.

Seed Planter Girl - Works along side of Liberty 5-3000

The Saint of the Pyre - This character appears only in the memories of Equality 7-2521, International 4-8818 and Union 5-3992. Equality 7-2521, at the age of 10, was witness to him being burned at the stake for uttering the "forbidden word".
